Cup Zone Lesson 1 – Teach Front Half of the Zone
Objectives Introduce the overall aims and structure of the cup zone, and teach the front half of the zone.
Comments This session focuses on teaching the overall structure of the zone, and allows the players to practice executing the structure and movement of the cup part of the zone.

Activities

Name Duration Outline
Explanation – overall zone structure 10 mins Using cones/water bottles as offensive and defensive players, explain the overall structure of the zone and what each position’s priorities are.
Warm up 15 mins
Thrower-Marker with a Moving Receiver 5 mins 3 Person Drill – with a Moving Receiver Players practice setting up as the mark and adjusting their positioning to shut down the throw to a moving dump.
Mark and Break 10 mins Mark and Break Players practice setting up as the mark and the break, working together to shut down their priority options, and coordinating their movement across the field as the disc moves.
Review 5 mins Have the players discuss what worked and what did not work from a defensive perspective, and how to ensure the mark and break execute their roles effectively.
Whole Cup 15 mins Whole Cup – with Wings Players practice setting up as each of the cup positions and practice working together as a unit to shut down the priority spaces.
Crashing Explanation 5 mins Explain what crashing movement looks like from the handlers and poppers, and explain that in these instances it is the alley’s job to move forward and defend the crasher while maintaining their line in the cup.
Whole Cup with Crashing 10 mins Whole Cup – with Wings The alley now practices defending crashes into the cup from both handlers and poppers.
Review 5 mins Have the players discuss what worked and what did not work from a defensive perspective, and how to ensure the cup execute their roles effectively.
